Corpus Christi ISD Educator Named 2026 NAESP National Distinguished Principal for Texas

Corpus Christi ISD Principal Dr. Christina Barrera has been named the 2026 NAESP National Distinguished Principal for Texas. Dr. Barrera will be recognized at the TEPSA Legacy Celebration Monday, June 8, at the Round Rock Kalahari during the TEPSA Summer Conference.
Over the past 13 years, Dr. Christina Barrera has been a catalyst for change, transforming Menger Elementary from a low-performing school into an exemplary campus that meets or surpasses state standards, proudly standing among the Top 5 schools in Corpus Christi ISD. Through shared leadership, she has built strong relationships and fostered an environment for growth. By promoting continuous improvement, every student gets the tools they need to succeed. Instruction supports struggling students and challenges high achievers, maintaining high expectations for all. Dr. Barrera’s commitment to creating a rigorous and engaging learner-centered environment on her campus have led her to be named the 2026 NAESP National Distinguished Principal of the Year for Texas by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).
“Dr. Barrera’s leadership is powerfully demonstrated through the remarkable academic turnaround of Menger Elementary. When she assumed the role of principal, the campus was ranked in the bottom five percent of schools in Texas. Through strategic instructional leadership, intentional professional development, and a relentless focus on high-quality teaching and learning, she guided the campus to a B rating with academic distinctions. This sustained growth reflects her ability to align data-driven decision-making with a clear, student-centered vision that ensures all learners are supported and challenged,” Corpus Christi ISD Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership Dr. John Prezas wrote in his recommendation letter.
At Menger Elementary, the foundation of supporting all learners lies in knowing and understanding the students, including their unique learning styles and academic aspirations. During their Professional Learning Community sessions, Dr. Barrera and her teachers collaborate to design effective instruction, establish goals, and analyze data to focus on both intervention and acceleration. They encourage students to take ownership of their learning by having them set and pursue their own academic objectives. Each year, Dr. Barrera personally meets with every student in grades 3-5 to demonstrate the process of goal setting. To give the youngest learners on campus the chance to develop essential background knowledge and thrive in upper elementary grades, Dr. Barrera and her team revamped their PK program. They shifted from a traditional classroom model to a more innovative learning experience that fosters numeracy and literacy through real-world, hands-on activities. This program recently earned recognition as a Top 3 Finalist in the Community’s Choice Awards for the Best of the Best Preschool Program.
“Dr. Barrera is an exceptional instructional leader who truly connects with her students and teachers and provides them every opportunity for success,” TEPSA Executive Director Harley Eckhart said. “She fosters a vibrant and supportive learning environment where both students and teachers feel inspired and motivated to pursue continuous growth.”
Strong partnerships with parents and community members have significantly contributed to student success. The school’s dedication to fostering robust relationships with all stakeholders and cultivating a collaborative, positive atmosphere is highlighted by its recognition as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School for four consecutive years. Dr. Barrera and her team consistently seek feedback to remain responsive to the community’s needs. At Menger Elementary, the relationships that enhance student achievement stem from deliberate relationship-building, shared leadership, and a commitment to ensuring the success of every learner on campus.
Dr. Barrera will be recognized at the TEPSA Legacy Celebration Monday, June 8, during the TEPSA Summer Conference. She and her school will each receive a monetary gift courtesy of long-time TEPSA partner Curriculum Associates.
